Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht is a municipality in Zuid-Holland, and has 24,821 inhabitants. The municipality is situated in the Zwijndrechtse Waard (a part of IJsselmonde, bordering on Ridderkerk, Zwijndrecht and the Noord). Until 1855 the municipality was named Hendrik-Ido-Schildmanskinderen-Ambacht en de Oostendam. The merger with Sandelingen-Ambacht in that same year led to the current name of the municipality, which happens to also be the name of the only village within the municipality’s borders. The original artisans were employed in the ship-breaking yard. Nowadays, most of the employment of the inhabitants lies without the municipality’s borders.
